The Hortillonnages in Amiens are a unique network of floating gardens spanning 300 hectares, cultivated since Roman times. Separated by narrow canals navigable by small boats, these gardens have historically provided fresh produce to local markets. The area supports diverse flora and fauna, making it an important ecological zone. The Hortillonnages host the annual "Marché sur l'Eau" where hortillons sell their goods directly from boats. Visitors can explore the canals on guided boat tours, enjoying the serene landscape. Recent conservation efforts aim to preserve traditional practices while promoting sustainable agriculture and tourism, integrating contemporary art to raise awareness.
