Dahlias at Tyntesfield

Clevedon North Somerset

During the Victorian era Clevedon became a popular seaside town. In 1869 the pier was used to receive paddle steamer passengers from Devon and Wales. I think it is a most wonderful Victorian Pier.

Tyntesfield

We visited Tyntesfield,  a Victorian Gothic Revival house and estate near WraxallNorth Somerset. it could not have been a better day to visit with the sun shining and the beginning of Autumn, leaves were beginning to change. The house is a Grade I listed building named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The location was formerly that of a 16th-century hunting lodge.  The trees on the estate are spectacular so it must have been amazing.
In the 1830s a Georgian mansion was built on the site, which was bought by English businessman William Gibbs, whose huge fortune came from guano used as fertiliser. In its hey-day Tyntesfield estate spanned over 6,000 acres, Gibbs liked to keep his estate away from the public eye.
